The Importance of Reflection in Making Tough Decisions

Hey girl, hey! Can we talk about changing plans for a second? I meant the goals we set for 2023. I know that life can throw you some curveballs, but it's all about how you handle them. Usually, I'm all about setting goals at the beginning of the year, but I also believe in quarterly and weekly reflection to make sure that you're staying on track. And let me tell you, not even halfway through the year, I was hit with a big one. I found out about the Mrs. International Pageant, and I couldn't resist signing up to compete. I had to put some major reflection / self-development skills to the test. I had to ask myself, “OKAY Malika, is this another shiny object that

you’re after?” Now, I've never competed before, but I'm always up for a challenge and pushing myself to be the best version of me. And let me tell you, when I saw that the pageant was 50% platform, I knew I had to go for it. It's an opportunity to share my passion for global health and innovation in technology through my non-profit. I mean, empowering our youth with skills like web development and coding can make a real difference in developing countries and tackle healthcare disparities. And who doesn’t look for an opportunity to dress up and look goooood? Come on now!  #Brains&Beauty. But, let's be real, signing up for the pageant meant giving up some things. Time and money, obviously, but also productivity coaching. I've been working on launching my program, The A.P.E.X. Productivity Blueprint, which is ready to go, but I knew that once I launched, there would be so much work to do. From webinars to newsletters to social media posts, on top of my current roles as the Founder/CEO of the Blueprint Foundation and running the Blueprint Academy, where we're teaching students web development, and of course being a wife and full-time ICU nurse.

I had to take a step back and reflect on what was important to me and what would make me happy. There are a few women I look up to like Marie Farleo, and Sandi Glandt, Mrs. International 2022. When I started looking into productivity coaching and helping women become the best versions of themselves I came across these two women. I went to Marie’s page and the first thing I saw was her talking to a big audience and impacting so many people at once, she likes to call it “one to many”. Along my journey came across Sandi’s Instagram page and she exuded the same kind of confidence. I look at these women and they are my role models. They are both big into self-development like I am as well and most notably they are high achievers like myself.

I had to sit with myself for a bit I had to reflect on the plan that I set out for 2023. I had envisioned what would my life look like leading up to the pageant, what do I have to give up and what would my life look like if I won. So, I made the tough decision to put productivity coaching on hold while I focus on the pageant and the Blueprint Foundation. It wasn't an easy choice, but I know that it's what's best for me right now. And that's the beauty of reflection - it allows you to assess your priorities and make decisions that align with your goals.

I want to mention that winning this pageant would be an incredible opportunity for me to create an even bigger impact in the world than I'm doing now. It would just 10x everything I'm already working towards, and it was through reflection that I realized this. I could have easily said, "not this year, I'm too busy," but I know what my future goals are, and this pageant brings me one step closer to achieving them.

Through reflection, I was able to come up with a new game plan for what my life would look like leading up to the pageant, as well as what I would do if I won. I had to ask myself tough questions about what I would have to give up to compete, including my productivity coaching program, which I had been working on for a while. But by reflecting, I realized that the sacrifices would be worth it in the end.

If I win the pageant, I can use my platform to raise awareness about global health and innovation in technology, which are both causes that are near and dear to my heart. I can also use this opportunity to promote my non-profit, the Blueprint Foundation Inc., and our mission to empower youth with skills like web development and coding to tackle healthcare disparities in developing countries.

But even if I don't win, I know that reflection has helped me develop a new game plan for moving forward. I'll go back to my original plan and continue working on launching The A.P.E.X. Productivity Blueprint, as well as running the Blueprint Foundation and Academy. Reflection has taught me that it's important to be flexible and adaptable and that sometimes, our plans may need to change in order to align with our goals. So, if you're feeling stuck or overwhelmed, take some time to reflect on your goals, priorities, and values. You may be surprised at what you discover and how it can help you move forward. Remember, a reflection is a powerful tool that can help you become the best version of yourself.

Practical Tips for Incorporating Reflection into Your Daily Routine

Reflection involves taking the time to think about your experiences, emotions, and behaviors in order to gain insight and understanding. It allows you to identify patterns, strengths, and weaknesses, and make informed decisions about how to move forward. It can also help you identify the root causes of your challenges and develop effective strategies to overcome them.

So why is reflection so important? Here are a few practical reasons:

1. It helps you identify your priorities: When you take the time to reflect, you can identify what's really important to you. This can help you prioritize your time and energy, and focus on the things that matter most.
2. It helps you develop self-awareness: Reflection can help you become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This can help you identify patterns and habits that may be holding you back, and develop strategies to overcome them.
3. It helps you make informed decisions: When you reflect on your experiences and emotions, you can make more informed decisions about how to move forward. You can identify what's working well and what's not, and make adjustments accordingly.

By incorporating reflection into your daily routine, you can gain valuable insight and understanding into your experiences, emotions, and behaviors. This can help you overcome challenges, achieve your goals, and become the best version of yourself. So, take some time today to reflect on your experiences, and see where it takes you.
